Comment:

Disappearing Earth is basically a collection of short stories about people's lives in a remote Russian peninsula. I found the characters compelling as they were all flawed, working through events life had dealt them. Luckily the book has a list of characters and their families at the front, which I referred to frequently. As the stories were interconnected, I found it interesting to learn about characters through the eyes of other characters. There's also a theme about indigenous people and their culture within Russia. I think it even wrapped up a bit at the end - though it's vague enough, in my opinion, to be open to interpretation.

Comment:

I was hooked at the beginning, so read on to figure things out. I just about gave up a few times because of the long drawn out conversations that I suppose where there to build tension. They just made me impatient so I started skimming. The end was kind of a let down, but not surprising.

A great mystery, but it took over 100 pages to introduce characters and get going. I nearly gave up, but am glad I didn't. Once it did pick up there was lots of action. Many characters to cheer for. Would have been a 4 star for me were it not for the slow start.

Comment:

I found the narrator a sympathetic character and his life in war-time Beirut interesting. But there's no real story arc - so far and I'm over half way through. It's a collection of short chapters about different people in this man's life.
