Down but not quite out small-time lawyer and his struggles with morality and ethics presented in an off-kilter often violent style. Funny, sometimes heartfelt performances.
Saul Goodman is undoubtedly a lovable flimflam shyster.

All out sweaty craziness.
With the populace depicted here so depraved and uncaring, it's a hard chore for the reader to cling to the few pockets of decency among the characters.
Nevertheless, the snazzy, rocket fire action and nutty humour is a fun ride. All out sweaty craziness.

Other than the autistic angle, just a standard though enjoyable action flick.
Successful movie hitmen seem to possess superhuman powers: a savant-like one as is in this case, is even more impressive.

Scarlett went a bit overboard with the deadpan delivery. Hard to blame her since there was little in the way of inspiring dialogue (for any of the characters).
Interesting "Dark Secret" type plot but still a few marks south of the snooze line.

These alien monsters get more and more weird, although the basic plot elements remain the same:
-the creatures are cunning and hard to kill
-the humans often make foolish, fatal mistakes
-circumstances conspire to create a perfect storm for slaughtering hapless victims.

The drama, on paper, looked good but the focus on a circle of arrogant, elitist characters with only a vague showing of the common people elicited little empathy from me.

A well-crafted study of the limits of endurance of pain and suffering and the warped mind of a monstrous sadist.

The 1959 version is still the bench mark.
To give a fair review, try to ignore comparisons. That said, Jack Huston is no Charleton Heston and this film has not nearly the same level of drama. Also, Heston's chariot race, without doubt, remains unsurpassed, even with today's special effects. How's that for ignoring comparisons?

Why didn't this one work? It had the requisite special effects and strong action sequences.
Perhaps Cruise sabotaged the film by choosing to portray a central character who was a goofball smart-mouth, though deep down decent guy.
It worked for Brendan Fraser in his Mummy series but that was a fun-filled, high adventure, exotic locale type of romp. This film tried for a darker, more sombre approach, but then threw in Tom Cruise and his jarring Jerry Lewis-like antics. Why didn't this one work? Trying to squeeze more life out of an already completed story. Stale.
Samara reminds me of the old Mummy movies, where the Mummy hypnotizes his lone victims, then slowly attacks at his leisure. Why don't Samara's victims run, say into a crowd? Wouldn't that cause a riot!Trying to squeeze more life out of an already completed story. Stale.
