In 1971, D.B. Cooper extorted $200,000 from Northwest Orient airlines. Once the plane was in the air, Cooper jumped out of the rear stairwell and parachuted to safety; neither he nor the money were ever seen again. This is the only unsolved airplane hijacking in the United States.
