In 1971, Derrick Bell (November 6, 1930-October 5, 2011) was the first Black professor to gain tenure at Harvard Law School. Called the “Godfather of Critical Race Theory” he was the most prominent exponent; other founding scholars: Alan Freeman, Kimberle Crenshaw, Richard Delgado, Cheryl Harris, Charles Lawrence, Mari Matsuda, and Patricia Williams.
