In this final installment of her Brown Sisters trilogy, Hibbert turns the focus on youngest sister, Eve. Unlike her older sisters, Eve hasn't yet found her path in life. But it's certainly not for lack of trying. She's tried a lot. Unfortunately, nothing ever seems to go the way she hopes, sometimes in really disastrous ways. After her frustrated parents decide to stop paying her bills in an effort to force her to grow up, Eve takes off and ends up at a bed and breakfast owned by Jacob Wayne, the most rigid, frustrating, and annoyingly handsome man she's ever encountered. So of course it makes absolute sense to take a job as head chef at his bed and breakfast. It really seems like the least she can do after accidentally hitting him with her car. As Jacob and Eve get to know each other, Eve also discovers some truths about herself, that might just go a long way towards explaining why she's always been such a hot mess. Maybe with Jacob on her side, she'll finally get things right. Hibbert concludes this wonderful series with a passionate story about two people who don't always fit into the world around them but find they fit together perfectly.

Ghattas (BBC, Financial Times) takes a comprehensive look across the Muslim world at "Generation 1979" and the implications of 40 years of revolution, rivalry, religion, and repression. While the book describes in detail the late-20th century rivalry of Sunni Muslim Saudi Arabia versus Shia Muslim Iran, Ghattas also depicts the related histories of Afghanistan, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, and Syria. She initially focuses on the pivotal year of 1979 because of three events which continue to send reverberations around the world: the Iranian Revolution, which brought to power Ayatollah Khomeini and the extra-national Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps; the sacking of Mecca's Holy Mosque by Saudi extremists; and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, which provided the first modern battleground for young men desiring the martyrdom of jihad. This book is indispensable reading for anyone seeking to understand the complex interplay of politics and religion that has ravaged the cradle of civilization - and beyond - and sent hundreds of thousands of civilians and soldiers to their deaths.

Beautifully atmospheric, Gilligan's novel brilliantly captures the period in the spring and summer of 1996 when the BSE outbreak (Mad Cow Disease) reached a tipping point, juxtaposed with Ireland's rich folklore and traditions. Every year, eight men known as the Butchers roam from farm to farm, enacting ancient methods of cattle slaughter. For the Butchers' families, life apart from these men means a life of loneliness and worry. As a photographer, Ronan believes these men are ideal subjects: representatives of an older, more folkloric Ireland whose traditions are being challenged by non-believers. As Ronan moves through the countryside and enmeshes himself with members of the Butchers' families, he perhaps captures the moment when the past finally catches up with the future. Highly recommended for literary fiction readers fond of Irish stories, as well as literary thriller readers looking for something a bit different.

Something is lurking in Chicago, something primal and evil. It stalks children by night, sowing confusion and fear wherever it goes. Chicago Police Detective Lauren Medina has seen many terrible things in her life, both on the force and in her past. And these recent killings feel so familiar. Can she put a stop to the spreading darkness in Chicago and save the children of the city, or will she be the one who needs to be saved? Cynthia Pelayo's novel blends the police procedural with creepy legends, Chicago history, and supernatural horror. Pelayo is from Chicago, and her love for its history and culture is clear as the story unfolds. Lauren is a nervy, determined protagonist with a traumatic past who is easy to root for, even as the suspense builds and the stakes get higher. Recommended for fans of hard-boiled detective novels with a fantastical flair, like Seanan Mcguire's October Daye series.

Grab your popcorn and settle in for this family drama. Matt Pine, college student, finds out that his family has died in a mysterious accident in Mexico. But was it something more sinister, related to his father's attempt to prove his other son, Danny, innocent of murdering his girlfriend? Or is it related to the documentary that was made about Danny? Matt gets drawn back to the small Nebraska town where it all began, and his narrative is interspersed with flashbacks to his family as they head off to their doom. Plot-driven, with a likeable hero and a plucky FBI agent who gets drawn in to helping him solve the case, this one is for John Grisham and James Patterson fans who enjoy good stories and satisfying endings.

Fans of Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go and The Remains of the Day will welcome the author's latest novel. Klara is an "artificial friend" in a near future where such creations are sold as companions for lonely young people. Klara isn't the latest version of the technology (think something along the lines of last year's iPhone), yet she has some special traits, and a girl named Josie chooses her. We follow as Klara enters the household of Josie's family and some family secrets and plans are gradually, subtly brought into focus. With its spare, plain language and minimal underlining of detail, this isn't recommended for readers looking for elaborate science fiction world-building, though it provides some tantalizing glimpses into its world beyond Josie's family. Instead this poignant tale reads like a haunting fable of modern life, exploring soulful questions of human nature, spirituality, social relations and family bonds.

Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein...Sophie Jones? The protagonist of Madeleine Henry's sophomore novel is a once-in-a-century genius, and everyone in the physics department at Yale knows it. Malchik, her advisor, believes that if she takes the machine-like approach to work that he does, she will change our understanding of existence forever. What about what Sophie wants? She wants Jake. Jake wants her. They're in love with each other, as the author makes evident with insightful, heart-rending, evocative prose that is rare in any genre. Will the pressure of expectation that comes along with genius force Sophie and Jake apart or bring them together? Sophie just may have to change the definition of time itself in order for their love to stand the test of it. The Love Proof is a sweetheart of a romance, and it has the brains to back it up.

Having already decided that her miserable life isn't worth living, Nora Seed attempts suicide only to find herself in a most unusual library. Within this mysterious library are an infinite number of books detailing the many what-ifs in Nora's life. What if she never gave up on competitive swimming? What if she never quit the band she was once in with her now-estranged brother? What if she moved to Australia of all places? The possibilities are truly endless, so Nora reads through volume after volume to discover which life makes her truly happy. Of course, Nora (and the readers) must ask, is a truly happy life without regrets even possible? Haig finds a way to balance a story about depression and suicide with lighter moments of adventure and whimsy, tackling big questions and quantum physics with joy. A satisfying read for fans of the mystical love story in Michael Poore's Reincarnation Blues or Nick Hornby's bittersweet novel A Long Way Down.

What was meant to be a quick trip turns into the duo travelling to multiple countries, adding more experiences and people to their posse until Tiller realizes he may be in over his head. One theme of this book is excess, with abundant food descriptions and exuberant characters clamoring off of the page, and as with all elements of excess, there is also the danger of overindulgence. Looking for a gentle escape? Smiley's latest is a charming story about a young French racehorse named Perestroika whose curiosity leads her to wander away from her stable. She ends up in Paris's Place du Trocadéro (the park near the Eiffel Tower) where she manages to hide during the lightened tourist foot traffic of winter and befriends a group of other animals. There's Frida, a dog whose street musician owner has recently died, and a curmudgeonly old raven, among other memorable characters. Perestroika (Paras, for short) also grows increasingly fond of a young boy who lives nearby with only his great-grandmother who is growing too old to take care of him. Deftly written, this story is sweet, upbeat and life-affirming without being too cutesy or schmaltzy (even winning over critics ranging from the Washington Post to the Wall Street Journal). This story of friendship and rescue is a heart-warming story for anyone recovering from trauma or hardship or just hoping to spend some time reconnecting with the optimistic side of life.

Why recommend a book called Wintering just as spring is nearing? Author Katherine May uses winter and how people cope with it as a metaphor to discuss all the fallow periods of life, the downtime, the recovery time, those periods of isolation and retreat when we need to rest and heal, no matter what time of year. Drawing on such episodes in her own life story (job loss, sick family member, a child's difficulty in school) and exploring traditions of winter coping from around the world, she shares advice and a way of thinking that will help readers dealing change and setbacks and looking for ways to be more resilient. Sure to appeal to readers of How To Do Nothing by Jenny Odell or The Art of the Wasted Day by Patricia Hampl, this is a new classic of psychology/self-help that also speaks very well to our long pandemic of isolation and social distance.

This enchanting historical fantasy tells the story of Angrboda, an ancient witch who is both valuable to and reviled by the gods in Asgard. A minor figure in Norse mythology, little is known about Angrboda beyond being the trickster god Loki's wife and the mother to their three children. Gornichec fills in Angrobodas story with empathy and vibrancy, weaving an exceptional story of love, betrayal, fate, and resilience against the backdrop of epic Norse legends. Encompassing vast swaths of time, and stretching through multiple worlds, this absorbing and heartfelt novel is a must-read for fans of retellings (especially feminist reinterpretations) of classic myths and legends. Readers who enjoyed Madeline Miller's Circe, Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology and Katherine Arden's The Bear and the Nightingale will adore this book.
