Billie Holiday and the Power of a Protest Song

I'm glad to finally see children's books dealing with something other than perfect lives. Billie Holiday was a child when she was jailed, and her reality is no less valid than fairy tales or Little House or Captain Underpants. In fact, it is children in unhappy and difficult circumstances that need to see themselves reflected in stories. And children who have secure home lives and stable parents with decent income, might benefit from an appreciation of their privilege, by contrasting what children like Eleanora Fagan had to go through. This is gorgeous book, and the story is told in a way so that children can understand. Recommend to children and adults.
