As with all her books, this is the extraordinary biography of her life in China and later in the U.S., that reads like a novel. It is compelling and vividly describes the many hardships she experienced and overcame. An absolute must-read. She wrote this book in English over an eight-year period and it won the Carl Sandburg Literary Award in 1993. I'd recommend it to anyone 13+ as well as "The Cooked Seed". Both would provide the reader with a deep insight into the lives of those who struggled during Mao's reign of terror and the courage it required to live "outside the well".
