This book reminds me of Joe Abercrombie's Best Served Cold, but Marshall's character are more human and relatable. He also weaves information about the characters and their world into the dialog and current action with no flashbacks or long digressions. There's a lot of humor in the but which doesn't take away the seriousness. I especially liked finding out what a "horned wolf" really was--you knew it was a dangerous animal, but there were no descriptions until one appeared.
