It is a collection of short stories - so be aware of that. It means you can read them as stand alone and they do not necessarily connect to each other. It is a good practice to read one and then stop before moving on the next story as it is not a novel. In this case, you might say it is a scrapbook study of the cast of characters in any Southern town - those folks who are in the store or on the sidewalk, but are not necessarily the stars of the town. There are some great themes here that Grisham lets the characters work through wherever that takes them. All in all a surprisingly good read.
