i would highly recommend this book. He describes the origins of just war principles, changes and additions, its application to 21st century armed conflicts and his own positions on each element of just war theory. I struggled a bit with his explanations of the work of certain philosophers but once I relaxed I was able to enjoy the entire book

It is a slim book and he makes no claim to deep coverage. He writes very well and you need not be an expert to enjoy it. In short, it opened doors for me.

Worth reading if you are interested in the philosophy of war. At times the author strays beyond his understanding (his understanding of fundamentalism and is his answer to it are both woefully lacking) but he has a way with words. There are many moments when he distills a complex idea into a perfectly crafted phrase. For those moments alone he is worth the read. He did not win me over, but he gives serious thought to an important question. The attempt to think seriously about the morality of waging war in an internally consistent manner is a worthy endeavor. The author does this. If you wish to as well, his ideas are worth entertaining. He truly excels when explaining the history of just war thought. An excellent read for that history of thought.
