Story about the March family of four daughters and a strong mother (Sarandon) who, because her husband is away serving in the Army during the Civil War, must raise her "little women" on her own. The daughters include: spirited Jo (Ryder) who longs for a career as a writer; beautiful and conservative older sister Meg (Alvarado); fragile Beth (Danes); and the romantic Amy (Dunst/Mathis). Through the years, as they become women, the sisters share their most cherished and painful moments of self-discovery as their mother's pride and strength guide them through questions of independence, romance and virtue.

It's sweet and memorable, but just a little cringy sometimes. I loved the book so much and I'm glad it was made into a movie.

An old but wonderful movie, great to watch as a family. Touching and heart warming, with a great cast.

One of my favorite movies to watch on a cold, winter day.

The condition of the DVD is pretty bad, but, what I could watch of the movie, I liked.

Unabashedly sentimental, but still a pleasant version directed by Gillian Armstrong and released in 1994. The actresses were all great, but I felt that most of the men were miscast. Even so, it's a very enjoyable family drama. Unfortunately, the NYPL DVD has a scratch on it, so it skipped over a section of the movie at one point and again in the special features.

Enjoyed watching this movie again. Wanted to watch it after reading - March - earlier in the year.

Entertaining and a great cast!

More languid and less tension than the book. Shot hereabouts: you can spot some locations if you look carefully. (Berlin work would not be done in a hoop.)

I liked that they made their attitudes a bit more modern as compared to the novel.

The cast does a pretty good job of restraint considering the fluffy, melodramatic sentimentality of the plot. Gabriel Byrne's miscasting as Friedrich Bhaer spoils the ending.
