Add a CommentThis was my favorite book of the series! I love Enna and her fire speaking. She is definitely evil and I like her humor! I couldn’t stop reading this book!
While "The Books of Bayern" are interlocking books, at least the first two are not a series in the traditional sense, and you can quite easily pick up this book without reading the prior entry, The Goose Girl.
Enna has always been attracted to fire, and when her brother learns the secret of drawing energy to himself and converting it to fire, Enna is sure that if she learned as well, she would do a better job of it. As her country prepares for war with the kingdom of Tira, she wants to help the cause, but finds that her powers may be more than she bargained for.
Even more than Isi in The Goose Girl, Enna is an independent woman who knows how to take care of herself. So, this series seems to be a great read for younger girls looking for a great girl lead. I'd say it's appropriate for age ten and up, whereas the previous novel, being less dark, would probably be good for younger readers.
Hale does a wonderful job of world-building, with the forest Kingdom of Bayern at the center, as they learn to treat those who live in their forests as part of their country and deserving of respect. Because of the war and subsequent events, Enna sees quite a bit of the world and Hale describes it all in beautiful detail. She also does a great job of showing Enna's inner struggle with her powers. We are so caught up in Enna's world, that it is not until Enna realizes that she has been blind to others sufferings that we realize the same. The power of friendship is again a main theme, both Enna's friendship with Isi and with Finn and Razzo.
A star off because it is emphasized early on how dangerous the power of the fire can be, and Hale keeps hitting that note again and again, until it's a little too much.
Friendships are tested when Razo and Finn discover that Enna has the power to wield fire. She must learn to control her powers or not only loose her friends but her life as well.
This was one of the coolest audio books that I have ever listened to. The voices all connected well and it was smooth, like the wind. It was a lot more violent then I thought, but it wasn't so much so that I stopped listening to it.
i have not read book three, but i love all the others! they are so good that i can't stop reading till four in the morning! (seriously i did that.) :) i totally recommend this series. and i like that every character in each book is connected. like, Enna is Ani's friend, and Razo is Enna's friend, and Rin is Razo's sister. the books are great read them if you aren't going to be busy for a while, you won't be able to stop.
Enna Burning is definitely a little darker than The Goose Girl. I enjoyed this book overall, although not nearly as much as I did The Goose Girl. For the full review, head to my book blog at so long and thanks for all the fish.
I liked this book! It was not as good as 'the goose girl' or the 'Princess Academy' books, but it was still an awesome Shannon Hale book. :)
I'm still obsessed with her stories, especially in this world. The characters are deep and there is growth and development. You root for the good guys and despise the bad guys while hoping everything will turn out ok. Looking forward to more of these.
This was amazing. My favorite of the books of Bayern series(I've read all four of them) Enna is strong and powerful and manages to survive through fire. She is tricked and she destroys without really wanting to.A beautiful story with a great ending.
This is a beautiful story. I felt like i was enna struggling with fire. Shannon Hale descriptions are so detailed, i can imagine everything perfectly in my head. this is a book that will sweep you away to the long ago and far away feel. This book (and the rest of the series) are the best fary tales/stories ever written. Enna Burning is an amazing story that i reccomend for 13 and up.
