The portraits of the German-born Reiss (1886-1953) reflect the 19th century belief that the world was divided into distinct races or "types", each of which possessed special cultural attributes. By documenting all the varieties, Reiss hoped to produce a collective portrait of humanity, displaying the unity underlying the diversity. This checklist, illustrated in b&w, derives from the research for the catalogue and exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery from Oct. 1989 to April 1990.
