The Governor Takes A Bride

The Celebrated Marriage of Cora English and John R. Tanner, Governor of Illinois (1897-1901)

Book - 1977
Rate this:
Their courtship was national news, and their wedding probably has never had an equal in Illinois history for the attention it received. The inauguration of John R. Tanner twelve days later, on January 11, 1897, seemed only a prolongation of the wedding celebration. And the move into the Executive Mansion was a triumphant conclusion to the courtship and wedding.

This cameolike portrait of the Governor and his lovely bride is remarkable for the picture of an era it creates. It was a brief period, for Tanner died in 1901, shortly after his term of office ended, but he and Cora English Tanner continue to occupy a unique place in Illinois history.
