From the author of Fun Home --the lives, loves, and politics of cult fav characters Mo, Lois, Sydney, Sparrow, Ginger, Stuart, Clarice, and others

For twenty-five years Bechdel's path-breaking Dykes to Watch Out For strip has been collected in award-winning volumes (with a quarter of a million copies in print), syndicated in fifty alternative newspapers, and translated into many languages. Now, at last, The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For gathers a "rich, funny, deep and impossible to put down" (Publishers Weekly) selection from all eleven Dykes volumes. Here too are sixty of the newest strips, never before published in book form.

Settle in to this wittily illustrated soap opera (Bechdel calls it "half op-ed column and half endless serialized Victorian novel") of the lives, loves, and politics of a cast of characters, most of them lesbian, living in a midsize American city that may or may not be Minneapolis.

Her brilliantly imagined countercultural band of friends--academics, social workers, bookstore clerks--fall in and out of love, negotiate friendships, raise children, switch careers, and cope with aging parents.

Bechdel fuses high and low culture--from foreign policy to domestic routine, hot sex to postmodern theory--in a serial graphic narrative "suitable for humanists of all persuasions."

You don't have to be a lesbian to appreciate the wit, wisdom, and joyful camaraderie bursting from the pages of this thoroughly addicting, Victorian-soap-operaesque-comic-strip compendium, especially if political satire is your jam.

A collection of Alison Bechdel's comic strip series that draws you into this tight-knit group of friends and makes you want to stay forever.

Is this the story of the Amazon Women's Bookstore, back when it was on Loring Park, back in the 90's, back when Slick Willy was president? Ya gotta read it, to find out ! (Imagine a comic book that weighs more than your kid brother!)

Pretty fascinating. Reminds me of my somewhat counter-culture youth. (t takes a surprising time to read; it's quite long and dense, especially when adding in perusing the expressive drawings. ) Touching in places. Lots and lots of criticism of American politics, which interested me less. Anybody who's spent a of time with radical feminists and political types will find lots that they recognize.

A good writer and illustrator, but would appeal to a reader more interested in American gender politics.

This comic is about lesbians, sex, the changing sexual politics, and the unchanging party politics over the last 30 years. Alison Bechdel is the best. Her art has gotten so much better over the years, and her character development is incredible, considering that each comic is one-page long. I have always related to the characters in the comics (although I am heterosexual) and have reread them over and over through the years. Highly recommended!
