This was a great start to a new series. Maggie is a fabulous heroine and the world that Roanhorse has created is terrifying, complex, fantastical, and just the right amount of believable. Urban fantasy fans will find a lot to love here.

This book was awesome and I am so pumped that it is going to be a series. I would also love to see this as TV show too. Maggie is an awesome heroine, a character type we really usually only see in a male character, and is so complex and shut off from any idea of belonging or real permanent friendship. Kai is an awesome, slick talking, sweetheart with his own secrets that match Maggie's powers. The dystopia they live in and the monsters and gods they interact with are perspectives that you likely haven't read before. I blazed through this and I bet you will too

A really great story with a Dine heroine set in a post-flood future. I loved all the characters and it sets up the series brilliantly for more adventures. I can't wait!!

I loved all the characters in this book, the mythos and lore that makes up the world, and the way in which Roanhorse shaped it into a diverse array of clan groups, characteristics, and supernatural abilities. A richly imagined landscape that I can't wait to return to in the sequel.

Great characterization, fascinating world-building, and compelling characters. Most of the book was really strong, but it lost a bit of steam in the last third - the plot threads didn't weave together as well as they should have, and there were a couple of "revelations" that were so obvious that I genuinely didn't realize the characters weren't supposed to already know them. Still, a very strong start to a series I'm interested in following to the next book.

Brilliant and not grim dark. Author won the Hugo Award for best short story and the Campbell Award for best new writer.

A powerful but tortured kick-butt Diné heroine fights her own demons while she also battles physically manifested monsters in this post-apocalyptic thrill ride. With amazing imagery, Rebecca Roanhorse skillfully builds a new world for readers while ensuring her characters are fabulously complex. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

This was a fantastic book! I felt as if I was watching a movie while reading it and it ended with so many twists and turns. My jaw dropped a few times. Can't wait to read the next installment in the series.

This new series reminds me of a cross between the Midnight Texas books by Charlaine Harris and the main character is a version of Anita Blake without all of the romantic entanglements.
I enjoyed the book. The characters were interesting and the mystery was hard to solve.

Very solid debut and first book in a new series. It was fun to read an Urban Fantasy novel steeped in Native American mythos. There were a few instances where I got kind of lost and wasn't sure how the characters ended up where they ended up, but it was still enjoyable to read. I would love to listen to this on audio to hear all of the Native American names and words pronounced correctly. Looking forward to the second book.
