Cozy Winter Reads for Teens
Winter has arrived early in Chicago. Boo! I wish we could hide under blankets until spring, but since that's not an option, these cozy winter reads will at least warm your heart. Some books just give you the warm fuzzies. What If It's Us is the sweetest romance I've read in a long time. After Arthur and Ben meet in a New York City post office but forget to exchange numbers, they search the… (more)

I read Ngozi Ukazu’s Check, Please! twice in the span of 48 hours. I legitimately couldn’t put it down. The graphic novel expertly blends striking art with witty dialogue to create an addictive story about college friendships, first love, and figuring out who you are. If that’s not enough to draw you in, there’s also hockey. And pie. Check, Please! is pure fun, driven by a refreshing, complex, and uniquely lovable cast of characters— by the end of the book, they felt like friends. The relationships between these characters are simultaneously deep and lighthearted, and a joy to watch develop. The fact that the book lacks much of a traditional plot does nothing to detract from its charm. My sole issue was that some of the dialogue was difficult to follow, but really, that only increased its authenticity. Honest, relatable, and absolutely hilarious, Check, Please! will most certainly put a smile on your face. All in all, I have to say that Check, Please! is one of my favourite graphic novels of all time. I can’t give it anything less than 5/5 stars.

A sweet and endearing peach pie of a story follows young, southern gay "Bitty" as he tries to bake, vlog and tweet his way through college hockey, with hilarious takes on bro culture, romance, fraternity life and more. Although there are plenty of F-bombs and some drug use, don't be fooled-this story is all sweetness and humor. A good read for teens and adults alike.
Full of swear words. Not appropriate for my 6th grader.
The fan fiction is better. Just kidding. Kinda. Great comic!!
"Check, Please! Book 1: # Hockey" is a cute graphic novel about a young man, Bitty, who chronicles his first two years at college and his experiences on the hockey team. The first volume mainly focuses on bonding with his teammates especially through his obsessive baking. He forms a special connection with the captain of the team that evolves into a crush. The characters are all fun if not a little bit idealized. I would recommend this to older teens and adults who enjoy fun, quick reads.
This was EXTREMELY sweet and fun. I want to know more of Bitty's day to day life during his freshman and sophomore year. My only qualms it that the story went too fast and at times was a little jumpy. But because we are usually seeing the story from vlogs from Bitty, the pacing makes sense.
You may have heard of the omgcheckplease webcomic created by Ngozi Ukazu, the first half of which is adapted for print in #Hockey. The graphic novel follows Eric Richard (alternately “Dicky” to his mom and “Bitty” to his hockey teammates), a hockey player from Georgia adapting to life on the Samwell University’s varsity men’s hockey team (affectionately #smh). The comic chronicles his adventures baking pies in the SMH frat house’s kitchen and struggling to adjust to checking after being recruited from his Georgian co-ed no-checking hockey club team, all alongside navigating life as a gay boy who’s not in the South anymore.
For a graphic novel about hockey, this book surprised me with how un-jock-like it was. The romance is fluffy with lots of mutual pining, and Bitty’s relationships with everyone from laconic SMH captain and hockey royalty Jack Zimmerman, scruffy gender studies major B. “S***ty” Knight, inseparable bros Ransom and Holster, and tiny freshman Sharks fan Chris “Chowder” Chow are wholesome and amazing. Another super compelling part: The title is an awesome pun.
Disclaimer: The Check Please! comic is intended to cover all four years of Bitty’s life at Samwell university. #Hockey only covers the first two years. Year 3 is published online, and you can read it for free, and Year 4 is not yet completed. Beware if you don't like reading WIPs!
I really loved this graphic novel. It's fun and sweet.
I've been hearing about this comic for so long but was always too intimidated to start it because it was so far along by the time I felt like I could. I blasted through this. It is so cute and wholesome for lack of a better term. It's fun, but so full of heart. I love everyone on the team and squealed at the end.
