To me this novel had everything you need suspense, action, and of course romance. Sea witch is not the typical little mermaid story, it is filled with unexpected turns of all sorts. Mysteries and secrets that you will not expect until the very end. I absolutely loved Sarah Henning’s way of writing. Something I love about this book is that it shows events from the past of the main character and some perspectives of some other characters later in the book. This is a story of betrayal and sacrifice. Sea Witch is the story of the witch from the little mermaid, but it is quite different, the author represented the evil sea witch in a whole different way. Which I loved because it showed me a side of the witch I’ve never seen before. This book showed me of all the trouble a person would go through for her loved ones. Most of the characters in the book are teenagers but they do not talk or act like teenagers, to me they seem a bit too mature for their age. I am not going to lie, I enjoyed this book. I give it a 4 out of 5. @Nat of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

"A bit rushed to be honest. It is interesting and pulls you in but you have to go back and re-read places to really understand what happened. It isn't super detailed its just rushed and monumental events happen with no suspense to them and you wonder to yourself.... did that just happen? And if it did why did it happen here? Where is my build up."
This book was terrific! All I can say is that it left a sad ending but you don't feel traumatized by it. It makes everything that Ursula is and will be suddenly make sense. The way she came to be known and feared by the entire sea. Henning did a great job telling of how Ursula may have came to be.

Review excerpt: "Fans of romantic YA and fans of dark retellings of fairy tales will want to check out 'The Sea Witch'. 'The Sea Witch' is both a YA retelling and prequel of 'The Little Mermaid'. It abounds in fantasy and plot twists and romance, although it’s quite clear from the outset that this book will NOT have a happy ending. A cool ending, yes. A weirdly satisfying ending? Sure. A happy ending? Nope."

I would give this a 3.75. I really loved the concept and I thought the author did a great job with the plot. It kept me guessing until the very end. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 star review is because I was still left with a few questions relating this story to The Little Mermaid. However even with the unknown parts of this story, I would still highly recommend it.

A thoroughly satisfying read with fleshed out characters and an intriguing story. If you thought you knew everything about Disney's version of the Little Mermaid, think again. This retelling blends both Hans Christian Anderson's story and Disney's version into a new tale.
