"In 2014, Jere Van Dyk traveled to Afghanistan to try to discover the motives behind a kidnapping that had occurred six years earlier--his own demaursuing his kidnappers, and the stories of the intermediaries and money men, Van Dyk uncovered not just the story of his own abduction but the operation of what he calls the Trade: the business of kidnapping. Operating according to its own shadowy rules, the Trade has become a murky form of negotiation between criminal groups, corporations, families, and governments who have no formal lines of communication"

Difficult reading this book inasmuch as you understand he was kidnapped and feel sorry for him but he is feeling so sorry for himself and blaming everyone around him when in essence he had no need to be there in the first place and he had no need to put others in harms way either. So he wanted a story and he got it with himself front and centre and then blames everybody around him yet trying to say how brave and focused he was. Still never gave up writing his story while he was there. Had to leave it in the end.

I'm a poor guy, but after hearing the interview on a radio program with the author, I admit to rushing out to buy this and read it in one sitting. Really enlightening and interesting on the most current of subjects. Once more it bears repeating: at the end of the Obama Administration, a Pentagon training program, costing $500 million or more, ended up with only five so-called rebels, who quickly disappeared. In other words, the rebels were either captured, or turned or already ISIS or al Qaeda, and all those weapons provided, as usual, ended up in ISIS hands! [This isn't just on Obama, it is a continuation of what began with Carter, Reagan, Bush #1, Clinton, then increased under Bush #2, and now will continue under the Trumpster!] We need qualified people in government, not stooges for Wall Street!]
