Opinion

From Library Staff

This New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist is in essence the story of a marriage, told in two narratives. Some interesting characters dominate this tale of the wife of a college actor who never quite made it in the big city (NYC, duh) until he suddently becomes a successful playwright. The wife's huge role in his plays' successes is downplayed to the point of almost disappearance, but this multi-vantage point story's sharp characters and Groff's strong writing make the story well worth reading.

I did not enjoy this book despite hearing good things and making a concerted attempt to get through it. Didn’t like the style of writing. Didn’t like the characters either. Would not recommend it

The writer’s ambitious effort is undermined by deployment of shallow, self-obsessed characters who she seems to believe can live superficially golden lives despite their lack of introspection, empathy and social consciousness.

Prose. A novel about having the courage to repair the cracks that inevitably appear in a marriage.

I had a hard time getting into the author's prose. Groff's writing style just isn't for me.

I found this book to be difficult to read. I kept going, thinking it would get better, but it never did. I couldn’t get into the characters at all. I was sorry that I took the time to finish it.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend it to everyone. It is interesting to see the two different sides to the same marriage.

I enjoyed this book. I appreciated reading about the differences in experiences and secrets between a married couple.

This book was awful. Groff created some incredibly unpalatable characters and wove a narrative that reeked of pretentious narcissism. I found the book to be amazing to the degree it repulsed me.
