Disappointing. May be on the Booker long list, but I found this
really quite boring. I love Val McDermid's work, and she apparently
thought this book was wonderful.
Sadly, I did not.

I don't usually go for police investigation novels, and there are plenty of obnoxious police characters in this book, but the story of the brilliant 14-year-old burglar, Jack, caught my heart from the very beginning and is so engaging that I couldn't put this book down for long. All the characters in this book are flawed and damaged and real. Don't let anyone tell you that if you loved Girl on a Train you will love this book. This book is far superior in my opinion.

This book surprised me. From the tragic beginning to the quirky characters and dark circumstances, this book is full of twists and turns and moments of humor. We see Jack Bright persevering -- trying to be the one in charge of his family at the age of fourteen. Alongside of his story is that of Catherine While. It takes a bit for us to comprehend how their narratives are intertwined and then we are hooked. A very unusual investigation and full of surprises.
