Genie Lo might seem like an ordinary girl: an Asian who lives in the Bay Area, goes to an extremely prestigious prep school, plays volleyball, and is really only focused on getting into an Ivy League School. However, her life is turned upside down, when she meets the mythical Monkey King Reincarnate, Quentin, who claims in her previous life Genie was a magical object with whom he used to beat monsters with. Hearing this, Genie had no desire to be a part of his mythical task force and kill demons. But, after many long quarrels she finally gave in and suddenly had to focus all of her time on killing yaoguai ( mythical Chinese monsters), and summoning her inner power that is according to Quentin, “strong enough to level the gates of Heaven.” I found this book to be hilarious, as Genie was a very angry character, while Quentin was the one who came up with witty remarks or snarky comments. However, I felt the plot went by too quickly, and although everything did come to a close, it was very fast paced. Many teens can relate to Genie in an insurmountable amount of ways, and I think thats what makes this book so great. Highly recommended for people who enjoy historical fiction, mythology, and strong female leadership. - Tej
