McLemore offers another beautifully written story incorporating magical realism and Latin American culture. The women in Estrella’s family possess the power to make flowers grow from their hands, but they’re also cursed: if they fall in love, the men vanish.

For me, the world building was far too abstract and not very captivating. Too much description.

This novel is pure magic. Everything about it is beautiful. It is like a 335 page poem that you never want to end. I fell in love with McLemore’s fairy-tale, bewitching writing, and I realized how rare it is for an author to make even the simplest words seem bright and full of magic. For almost a century, the Nomeolvides women have lived on and cared for La Pradera. The women possess magic in their bodies; they make flowers. Lilies, starflowers, roses, daisies. There is one secret that they hide; when a Nomeolvides woman falls in love with someone, La Pradera takes them away forever. When an enigmatic boy, Fel, shows up on La Pradera, Estrella is immediately drawn to him and helps him uncover his mysterious past. A magical read, highly recommended if you are a fan of realistic fantasy fiction. 5/5 stars.

Breathtaking descriptions, a fascinating and original fantasy, a romance, Spanish history, all come together for a great read.

In this, her third novel, Anna-Marie McLemore returns with her lush, polished prose and fine touch for magic realism. Although slower paced, her novels always deliver for atmosphere, character, and emotional impact, and Wild Beauty is no different.

I LOVED When the Moon Was Ours, and it is a book I recommend so easily to teens who come into the library looks for magic realism or diverse reads. I have yet to read The Weight of Feathers, but I knew after my first Anna-Marie McLemore book that I would be sold on her for life. She's an amazing writer who weaves such unique stories together while also featuring under-represented groups of people as the leads.

Wild Beauty and I actually didn't connect right away. This book is slow, thoughtful, and it marches to the beat of its own drum. Apart of me as I was reading it felt like I didn't entirely understand what was going or who the characters were becoming. However, the more I read, the more captivated I was by all the feelings I was having. This book just has such an ethereal quality to it -- it's like getting lost in something so beautiful, yet simple. There is so much mystery, intrigue, and I feel like I was being swept away.

And that's really all I am going to say about Wild Beauty. While it has moments where it's very slow, it's a book that you need to keep going with it because it will grab you and when it does it doesn't let go. The characters, the world, the writing, it's so magical, and it's an experience to say the least.

For a hundred years, La Pradera has bloomed under the hands of the Nomeolvides women, five in every generation, whose magic brings to life what was once a barren landscape unfit for farming. But the Nomeolvides women are cursed; any man that they love too much, who stays too long, will disappear into La Pradera, never to be seen again. They have lived with this pain for generations, defined and shaped by it. So when Estrella and her four cousins make an offering to the land, and a boy appears, a boy who seems to be out of his time, a whisper of hope goes through the family. Fel has no memory of how he came to La Pradera, but what if he was the disappeared lover of a long ago Nomeolvide woman? But even as the women begin to hope that their lost loves may not be lost forever, the arrival of a new member of the family that owns the land they are bound to threatens everything they have built.
