A memoir by an upper middle class University Dean about her cousin, who was sent to the penitentiary as a child and emerged a decade later, at which point the author tried to "help" him. Without any understanding of his experience or probable post-traumatic stress, Allen assumed that her values - a job, an education, an apartment - would be what he wanted and needed. The author seems to have no idea of the larger context and offers no critique of society or the system except regarding drug laws. Although I agree with her conclusion about what should be changed in this regard, I found her overall tunnel vision very frustrating.
