Only 8, Jasmine is told she is still too young to join in the annual New Year's mochi-making celebration called Mochi-tsuki. Jasmine is determined to find a way to help, though - not by rolling the mochi balls, which is the women's job, but by pounding the mochi like the male relatives. Will she find a way to prove her strength?Young readers newer to chapter books will enjoy reading about Jasmine's tight-knit family and personal determination, as well as learning about a Japanese tradition which may be unfamiliar.
