*mild spoilers* You know the expression: "greater than the sums of its parts"? Well, this is the opposite. Fantastic direction, actors and a lot of cool ideas... But it all falls apart in the third act. I don't want to give away too much but Dr. Shaw not being in it is so annoying. Didn't they learn anything from Alien 3 where characters from the previous film were just gone... Dr. Shaw was an interesting character from Prometheus on a mission to understand why the Engineers wanted humanity destroyed. That's the movie I wanted to see. I really like a lot of the characters and ideas in it but it was like the ideas were on post-it notes and just crammed into a script that wasn't polished. What they did with Shaw's character and smart character suddenly getting really, really, really stupid just caused this film to fall flat. Everyone knows what's going on at the end, except the characters on screen. Supposedly brilliant scientists and engineers should not be dumber than every single audience member.
The worst! A stupid story with zero logic has only one purpose: to give screen time to hideous little alien creatures that are immune to bullets. None of the atmosphere of the original classic.
Gory, creepy with a twist. If you've seen the other alien movies you can guess how it'll end.
Originally I wasn't sold on this idea - especially when they are changing the whole cast all over again. But I agree it is WAY better than Prometheus and they do a good job of tying the movie into the overall storyline.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW
There are a couple things that really didn't make sense to me though. Somehow David (the android...and why is ALWAYS the ANDROID?) managed to create an entirely new method of release for the alien impregnation. He also seems to be doing this without a Queen which was always a big part of the Alien biological cycle. Also, so if he basically infected the ENTIRE planet with these spore created aliens then they seemed to all leave him alone for 10 years and not be present in crazy numbers on the surface. Some logic gaps but in general you could ignore them and just enjoy the movie
Very good and very gory. Far better than "Prometheus."
This is what could be called pornographic horror. I was disgusted to see (even a simulation of) a man being killed and his body taken over by a hideous creature. It wasn't lovely to watch -- the creature entered through an ear (shades of Star Trek, Wrath of Khan), quickly grew to maturity and broke out through the man's back like a bomb, destroying him. It's hard for me to come to grips with the millions of dollars that must have been spent on this 100% trash. Totally disgusting.
Spoiler!! Why would the Engineers create something that will kill themselves? And why are the results so random? This whole pseudo-sci-fi is way beyond believable or logical. Disappointing.
Not a dull moment!
I've never seen the Alien series, but this was a great Sci-Fi movie. I watched Prometheus, which was also a fantastic Sci-Fi movie! I also recommend watching Prometheus first to understand this sequel. There were still some unanswered questions that I had to look up online. After watching this, I'm going to definitely check out the first Alien movie.
A great continuation of the Alien franchise.
