I watched this because I highly respect director Ridley Scott and actor Michael Fassbender, but I really doubted that much new of substance could be added after the first two Aliens. I was right. After the first few shocking killings, the remainder were kinda' repetitive. The ending was almost a copy of the ending of "life." The "Life" with Jake Gyllenhaal, not the film about James Dean.
I though this film started out slowly and didn't live up to the promise of Prometheus. I was hoping for more backstory on the "Engineers".
I was impressed with this sequel to 2012 film, Prometheus, and prequel to the 1979 Alien classic. I did find that the difference between David and Walter was minimal and somewhat weak, however, did interestingly able to tie up the most of the questions asked in the previous film. The only one main question, unanswered, is of whom the Engineers are and their background.
It is another imaginative look at what can happen when humans create and depend upon, Artificial Intelligence.
The Special Features add some deleted and extended scenes.
I ranked this pretty high for the story and delivery, but falls short of being as scary and unique as the original Alien film.
This movie is awful. To think this movie was directed by same person as the original Alien masterpiece of horror and science fiction. The cast is completely forgettable. What's the point of this exercise in boredom? The special effects are lame. How many times are we going to see the creature come out of the chest? Ridley Scott is really shooting blanks in this flick.
Directed by Ridley Scott, expected something better than this. No stars.
*mild spoilers* You know the expression: "greater than the sums of its parts"? Well, this is the opposite. Fantastic direction, actors and a lot of cool ideas... But it all falls apart in the third act. I don't want to give away too much but Dr. Shaw not being in it is so annoying. Didn't they learn anything from Alien 3 where characters from the previous film were just gone... Dr. Shaw was an interesting character from Prometheus on a mission to understand why the Engineers wanted humanity destroyed. That's the movie I wanted to see. I really like a lot of the characters and ideas in it but it was like the ideas were on post-it notes and just crammed into a script that wasn't polished. What they did with Shaw's character and smart character suddenly getting really, really, really stupid just caused this film to fall flat. Everyone knows what's going on at the end, except the characters on screen. Supposedly brilliant scientists and engineers should not be dumber than every single audience member.
The worst! A stupid story with zero logic has only one purpose: to give screen time to hideous little alien creatures that are immune to bullets. None of the atmosphere of the original classic.
Gory, creepy with a twist. If you've seen the other alien movies you can guess how it'll end.
Originally I wasn't sold on this idea - especially when they are changing the whole cast all over again. But I agree it is WAY better than Prometheus and they do a good job of tying the movie into the overall storyline.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW
There are a couple things that really didn't make sense to me though. Somehow David (the android...and why is ALWAYS the ANDROID?) managed to create an entirely new method of release for the alien impregnation. He also seems to be doing this without a Queen which was always a big part of the Alien biological cycle. Also, so if he basically infected the ENTIRE planet with these spore created aliens then they seemed to all leave him alone for 10 years and not be present in crazy numbers on the surface. Some logic gaps but in general you could ignore them and just enjoy the movie
Very good and very gory. Far better than "Prometheus."
