So, the Cubs won the World Series. Whoop-de-doo. Whoop-de-freakin-doo. Then Tom Verducci had to go and write a book about it, “The Cubs Way: The Zen of Building the Best Team in Baseball and Breaking the Curse”. Geez, like they invented the game of baseball or something. Give me a break. I was hoping they would go another 108 years without winning the World Series. For so long, the Cubs had all the advantages - big city, rich owners, their own TV superstation - and still they would lose and lose and lose. Consistently and constantly. They were “lovable losers”. Oh, I really hated that. They were just LOSERS! Why did anyone like them? Was it because they were on TV every day? Man, don’t get me started (too late). Then, the law of averages being what it is, they finally lucked into some good players and at long last won the World Series. And the flood of blather about it goes on and on. Okay, so what about Verducci’s book? Considering all I’ve written so far, it may be surprising that I’m giving it a thumbs up. Yes, the subject makes my blood pressure rise, but this is a well written, behind the scenes look at - it pains me to say - one of the bigger stories in recent baseball history. Tom Verducci is a talented writer, and he is quite knowledgeable about baseball. The fact that I was able to actually read a book about the Cubs from beginning to end says something about his work. Still hate the Cubs, though. Oh, and one more thing. I have been to Wrigley Field. What a dump.
