His family moved to Brooklyn and then to Newark, New Jersey. In 1990, he formed the musical group the Fugees with his cousin Pras Michel, and Lauryn Hill. In 1996, the Fugees released their most popular album, The Score, winning the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Jean released his debut album Wyclef Jean Presents the Carnival Featuring the Refugee All-Stars in 1997. Multiple albums followed, including Masquerade, The Preacher's Son, Welcome to Haiti: Creole 101, and follow-up albums to his debut album Carnival, Carnival, Vol. II, and Carnival III: Road to Clefication. Jean produced for multiple artists, including Santana, the Knocks and Shakira. He established Y le Haiti, a charitable organization providing aid to the citizens of Haiti after Hurricane Jeanne and the 2010 Haitian earthquake He attempted unsuccessfully to run for president of Haiti in 2011.
