James Avery was born on November 27, 1948 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. After high school, he served in the U.S. Navy in Vietnam from 1968 to 1969. Settling in San Diego, Avery wrote poetry and television scripts, winning an Emmy Award. Awarded a scholarship to the University of California, San Diego, he earned a B.A. in drama and literature. Best known for appearing in the role of Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Avery's credits include the television shows Sparks and Showtime's Soul Food; and the films Dancing in September, Dr. Doolittle 2 and License to Drive. Avery playing the lead in Othello at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and he also appeared onstage at the Back Alley and Met Theatres in Los Angeles. He hosted the critically acclaimed PBS series Going Places. Avery passed away on December 31, 2013 at the age of sixty-five.
