#TBT: Happy 85th Birth Anniversary, James Brown!

James Brown was a one of a kind performer and a hugely influential musician. With all of that star power, it's hard to remember that he was a father and a husband He was also a bandleader who provided jobs and support for up and coming musicians—when he wasn't kicking them out of the band due to any number of infractions. It's not possible to do justice to James Brown's fifty year career… (more)

From Library Staff

John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd star as Chicago brothers trying to reunite their band and save an orphanage in this rollicking musical comedy.

John Belushi helped bring the Billy Goat Tavern to Saturday Night Live and the bad guys to Wrigley Field in The Blues Brothers.

You really have to suspend you disbelief, and check your brain at the door in order to enjoy this movie. But the music and gags, and especially the car chases and crashes, are so funny and over the top, it literally inspired the owners of a Chicago movie theater to place an actual 1974 Dodge sedan and life size statue of Dan Ackroyd on the roof. True story. But, I LOVE this movie. If you don't, I can see why. Just don't say that in Chicago.

My nickel review: horrible as a movie (too slow paced, too much gratuitous destruction, really hacky acting), but great sight gags, and cameos, and muzak!

This film is intended to showcase the music Belushi and Aykroyd loved, loosely tied together by the ridiculous plot of two characters being chased by pretty much everyone. The timing of the elevator scene near the end was brilliant.

A great comedy featuring Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi. My favorite musical with a ton of great blues music. The only film that I know where you can see Carrie Fisher with a flamethrower. It's a bit long and rated R primarily for language, but it's still a great movie.

A classic. Watched in my 20s and now again 40 ish years later. Still fun.

Is it heresy to suggest that this movie is really not all that funny and that the idea of two white guys playing "blues brothers" continues the exploitative relationship of mass culture to black music? Probably. It is a classic after all. Does feature some iconic musicians like Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Lee Hooker, all of whom deserve a better setting for their talent.

Wasn't there a sequel made to this video? Blues Brothers 2*** ?

Definitely a fun romp, but a little long for my tastes (2.5 hours? for a COMEDY?!). Deadpan humour very enjoyable. Over the top scenes of mayhem detracted from the whole thing for me. Must've been fun to make, though. I wonder how much it cost to trash all those police cars....

Very well done movie. A pleasure to watch. I would recommend this movie for all to see. No fast forwarding on this one. A++ DVD
