In What Is the Bible? Rob Bell once again earns his admirable notoriety as an original and provocative Christian preacher, bringing an ancient holy "library" of sacred texts back to conversational life in a way that will enrich and challenge believers as much as it invites real engagement by outsiders and non-Christians. In an innovative "prose" style that reads as the other side of a discussion with the reader, sometimes in poetic stanzas and strategically crafted white space, Bell draws attention not only to well-known stories and themes but also to fascinating overlooked bits of the Bible (such as a brief passage about King Melchizedek blessing Abram that turns out to be potentially quite meaningful- anyone raised Christian remember that from Sunday School?) and reveals how they truly contribute to the overall narrative arcs of justice for the poor and oppressed, restoration, reconciliation, liberation from bondage, and trust in a redemptive hope for history and humanity. Bell also has an intriguing answer to the question "What about all the barbarity and 'weirdness'"? A thoughtful and inspiring approach, with "agreement" with the author being so beside the point, What Is the Bible is just the kind of mind-expanding reading experience that a book with a point of view should be.
