Required reading for freshmen at the Kansas City Art Institute. Should be required reading for anyone.

I loved how this book ebbed and flowed with spirituality within a secular world. Its one that had me thinking/feeling long after I had read it and it's sequel, which was equally as haunting.

A gorgeously poetic exploration of an artist who must create even when it costs him everything.

The beginning of the story told in The Gift of Asher Lev. This book was first (shame on me for not noticing that right away). A Hasidic Jew grows up with an incredible talent for art and begins to cultivate his skills with mixed reactions from his family and community. Most are against it. Although it’s hard to place myself in such a milieu where painting itself would be such a mortal crime, Potok does an excellent job of helping us understand the consequences of Asher’s choices. Wrenching and deep. I highly recommend immediately reading the sequel.

Incredible. As usual Potok creates poignant prose using simple, clear, artfully crafted sentences. One of my favorite authors. Words written by any other take on an intensity of meaning with Potok's nuanced understanding and searing juxtaposition of two worlds. I can't wait to read the sequel.

I loved all the references to different artists and their pieces.
