Good sports movie. And since Disney is involved in this movie one can pretty much feel the heartstrings get pulled a plenty here. In this case 2 girl wrestlers overcoming personal and professional prejudices to reach the top of their mountains. The wrestling was good and the girls performances were very uplifting.

This is ostensibly a film about equality for girls in the sport of wrestling. Two sisters do indeed in real life in go on to win medals for India and for this they have to thank their ex-wrestler-father, who's disappointed that he doesn't beget sons and decides to train his daughters in the sport. Yes, it takes some courage and confidence to train one's daughters in wrestling, but the center piece of Dangal is not the two girls but rather the father. They submit to his complete authority. It's no coincidence that his name is "Mahavir" because he is the great hero in the story. It's he who empowers his daughters. His wife figures in only as a womb for 4 children and one who quietly serves the food. She defers completely and is never once consulted in the raising of the girls. It's clear her opinion doesn't count one bit.

There are the moments of patriotic exultation as one daughter sweeps in her gold medal, but--make no mistake--Mahavir is the real hero of it all. Females are to be grateful for the male who allows them their potential.
