Tells the true story of how Ray Kroc, a salesman from Illinois, met Mac and Dick McDonald, who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was impressed by the brothers' speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential. He maneuvered himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a billion-dollar empire.

I likes hamburgers

The founder(s) had imperfect moral characters as portrayed but deserved accolades for their business acumen, ingenuity, persistence and ambition that revolutionized the fast food restaurants, for better or worse. The appending link to "The Founder Movie vs True Story," with photos between real characters and their actors, seemed to validate that the film was based on known facts with a couple of minor changes.

One of the best "based-on-fact" movies I have seen. It goes a long way to show that "nice guys (such as the McDonald brothers) finish last." Ray Krock was persistent. He was also totally ruthless. When he comes to see Dick McDonald in hospital, after his heart attack, carrying a bouquet of flowers, it is really to tempt him with a blank check (to sell his birthright for a mess of pottage). He later reneges on his promise to pay the brothers their royalties, having agreed to do so on the basis of a handshake between "gentlemen." Makes me think of Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. Inherently good men, they both lacked the ruthlessness of an FDR or Teddy Roosevelt. Maybe only Honest Abe Lincoln is the only hero who felt the pain of others?

This was an interesting depiction of the evolution of Goliath fast food companies in North America. Not something that I would watch again or rave to friends about though.

If this is capitalism you can have it. I appreciated that this movie was made for it has enlightened me to this cut throat industry and the heartless people involved. I have not eaten there in years and I will tell all my family and friends not to ever eat at this restaurant again.

Great movie to see how far one person will go for i million business affair, and give up on his own marriage, his own friends his chore character ( cheating, stealing , and becoming a shark in the business world. May be we can say the he was a clever man but not a loving one. Very harsh and brutal in business. Real learning life of building a kingdom of power, money by himself and for himself.

Overall this film is more about the acting, which is very good. Keaton was great. The actors who played the McDonald's brothers were awesome. The story it hopes to expose seems secondary. Kroc was a jerk. The world would have been fine without a global corporation like McDonald's having asserted itself all over the globe but who knows what would have taken its place. The film also reminds me to read every contract very carefully.

Jeffn mentioned that the film doesn't discuss some other negative aspects of the rise of McDonald's but I don't know if the film could take on too much. That being said, I thought the example of how Kroc wanted to introduce a powdered milkshake instead of the 'real thing' was an example of how the fast food industry would ultimately opt for more economical options than wholesome, natural food products. It was symbolic of where the industry would go.

Somewhat silly depiction of the development of the 'speedy system' at one point, and seems a bit of a flat portrayal of the main characters and values (delicious and 'family') of McD's service to humanity, but otherwise a decent enough watch. No review of 'bigger' issues like the health effects of its food, consideration of the exploitation of its workers or the larger impacts on the farming and food processing industry however... so I would watch this with a large pinch of salt and even larger pinch of one's waist (i.e. saturated fat). There are books written e.g. 'Super Size Me', 'Fast Food Nation', 'Cow Spiracy' and 'Project Animal Farm' that are likely better uses of your time... Ray's Crocs comment on what he would do for a drowning competitor is reminiscent of the book 'The Corporation' as well... Yes, I have read all of the above books, and I did work part time at a McD's restaurant for several years as a teenager... Your mileage may vary, batteries not included, past performance is no indication of future expectations etc etc.

As mentioned by others, this movie reveals how much of a predator Ray Kroc really was. He virtually stole the name and store prototype from the McDonald brothers, then didn't honor a handshake agreement for royalties between them.

Interesting period character study.

Near the film’s beginning, not in IMDb:
Persistence. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent won't. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius won't. Unrewarded genius is practically a cliché. Education won't.
The world is full of educated fools. Persistence and determination alone are all powerful. Show that you don't have to be defeated by anything. That you can have peace of mind, improved health... and a never-ceasing flow of energy. If you attempt each and every day to achieve these things... the results will make themselves obvious to you. While it may sound like a magical notion... it is in you to create your own future. The greatest discovery of my generation is... that human beings can alter their lives by altering their attitude of mind. Or as Ralph Waldo Emerson declared, "a man is what he thinks about all day long."

What you ought to be doing... is buying up plots of land... then turning around and leasing said plots to franchisees. Who as a condition of their deal... should be permitted to lease from you, and you alone. This will provide you with two things.
1. A steady up front revenue stream... money flows in before the first stake is in the ground.
2. Greater capital for expansion. Which in turn fuels further land aquisition... which in turn fuels further expansion... and so on, and so on.
Land. That's where the money is. And more than that, control. Control over the franchisee. Fail to uphold quality standards, you cancel their lease. Control over Dick and Mac. End result, you'll have the banks and the franchisees in the palm of your hand.

Hi, welcome to McDonald's. May I take your order?
- Yeah, I'll have a hamburger, french fries, and a Coca-Cola.
That'll be 35 cents please.
You think big, don't ya Joan?
-Is there any other way to?
Well, you'd be surprised. A lot of people are afraid of taking a chance to, you know, reach for greatness.
-That's so sad.
I agree. Ambition. That's the stuff in life. What was that saying? Fortune favors the bold.

Quotes below and many more are in IMDb:
Now, I know what you're thinkin'. How the heck does a 52 year old, over-the-hill milkshake machine salesman... build a fast food empire with 16,000 restaurants, in 50 states, in 5 foreign countries... with an annual revenue of in the neighborhood of $700,000,000.00... One word... PERSISTENCE. Nothing in this world can take the place of good old persistence. Talent won't. Nothing's more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius won't. Unrecognized genius is practically a cliché. Education won't. Why the world is full of educated fools. Persistence and determination alone are all powerful.

You know, contracts are like hearts... they're made to be broken.
Mr. Kroc, if you're not making money hand over fist, something's terribly wrong.
It's all bluster, Dick. His bark is worse than his bite.
-That's what Neville Chamberlain said.
If phony powdered milkshakes is your idea of progress you have a profound misunderstand of what McDonald's is about.
- I have a far greater understanding of McDonald's than you two yokles.

Ray Kroc: If I saw a competitor drowning, I'd shove a hose down his throat.
