An excellent biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Very inspiring and educational for kids.
Read this to you 8-12 year-olds- male and female. All good stuff between the covers here.
Disagreeable, NO! Determined, YES! This inspiring biography for kids traces Ruth Bader Ginsberg's life from a determined little girl through her service as our first Jewish woman Supreme Court judge. Along the way we see her breaking old patterns of racial and sexual discrimination in schools, jobs and public accommodation. The illustrations by Elizabeth Baddeley are vibrant and fun. This book can introduce children to historical injustices and alert them to recognise instances of discrimination in today's world.
Giving us snippets of her life from childhood to present, this biography clearly illustrates how Ruth Bader Ginsburg fights for equal justice for all as a member of the Supreme Court. The book contains positive messages about dissenting, being capable no matter your race/gender, and acceptance of who you are. An inspiring biography for all ages (although geared toward the elementary-aged).
What a fantastic biography! I love this book because it shows how feminism isn't just for women and girls, but for men and boys. My favorite scene is the one where Justice Ginsburg, her husband, Martin, and their children Jane and James are seated at the dinner table enjoying a gourmet meal that Martin--an accomplished attorney AND an expert in French cuisine--has prepared for the family. The point: when women who wish to are allowed to have careers outside the home, men who desire to focus their attention on domestic life have an opportunity to do so, too. I also appreciate how the book touches on the friendship between Justice Antonin Scalia and Justice Ginsburg, who enjoyed each other personally despite their professional differences. Highly recommended for both boys and girls, and anyone else with an interest in law, politics, social justice, and U.S. history.
This book made me teary in a good way! I like the book's positive message about disagreeing with unfair policies and conditions around us, and I learned something that I didn't know before: Justice Ginsburg wears a different lace collar when she dissents. Also, despite her frequent, strong disagreements with Justice Scalia, she was able to put their differences aside and have a strong friendship with him, traveling and enjoying themselves together. She really is a dynamite lady!
This is an excellent kids' biography of Ruth Bader Ginsburg -- the artwork is awesome, and I thought the idea of using the concept of dissent as a theme throughout the entire book was clever (and entirely appropriate with Ginsburg's life and career). This is one that I can see kids and adults alike really enjoying -- I certainly did.
