From the title, I thought this book would be about teaching a young child how to voice likes and dislikes. I was very incorrect in my assumption. It is a book that uses things that children enjoy (shoes, bricks, popcorn, playing) and uses them to highlight global child labor practices. While I understand that the author is using this book as a conversation starter on how children in western society are more privileged that others around the globe, the authors notes at the end of the book on how to do something about the problem are not geared toward the child reader. I think this book could be a good conversation starter for older children, but would need to be accompanied by a lot of context for younger children. I feel like this book is made to make children feel guilty for liking common childhood activities (example: one page is a group of children playing soccer accompanied by the text "I like soccer balls" and the opposite page has a sad young child sitting on a dirt floor hand sewing soccer balls with the text "I don't like soccer balls"). If the authors really wanted to inspire change, they would include resources to fair trade organizations, to provide a proactive solution that children can actually take to change the world (to be fair they do provide contact information for international aide groups) instead of implying that all rice & popcorn are harvested by child labor.
