While this appears to be a juvenile picture, it contains a wealth of information of particular value to visual learners. Teachers beginning to teach environmental studies, geology, animal habitats or even art at all grade levels should take a look at the painstakingly accurate illustrations. Teachers could definitely use the book for differentiated instruction, but, more importantly, for engaging students in what might otherwise be dry topics, or topics with which they have no experience. Highly recommended!

This book does a great job telling the story of the Grand Canyon from 1.2 billion year ago to today. It goes into detail about the geology, rock formations, and ancient and modern animals that live there.

A grand story, beautifully illustrated about Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. Good for ages 9-12. A 2018 Caldecott Honor Book and Sibert Honor for distinguished informational books published in English.

Wonderfully illustrated and informative. Learn fascinating geological facts while hiking along with a girl and her father. Animals living in the habitats of the region are pictured around the edges of larger spreads. The picture book format allows the images to provide complex info without overwhelming young readers. Grades 2-5

Terrific book for kids ages 5-10 who are curious about natural history. Fabulous illustrations really "take you there" and give the reader a feeling for the landscape and its flora and fauna--both past and present. Easily transitions from present-day to past geologic eras and back again. Many interactive features (such as "cut outs") that hint at what is coming and my kids loved to guess what was on the next page from only the small part of the drawing visible through the cut-out. Has 2 fold-out pages at the end showing a panoramic view of the canyon from the rim. No reference to the ancient cultures who used to (and still do) occupy the land here, so for that you'd need a different book.
