As a novice horror reader, the beautiful illustrations and creepiness kept me engaged and wanting more.
Through the Woods collects the horror comics of Emily Carroll, including the popular online short comic, “His Face All Red.” The richly colored illustrations vacillate between whimsical and sinister, while disturbing images at the stories’ climactic moments highlight Carroll’s artistic talent.

"Oh, but you must travel through those woods again and again," said a shadow at the window, "and you must be lucky to avoid the wolf every time. But the wolf . . . the wolf only needs enough luck to find you once."

Add a Commentbone-chillingly awesome. There are so many stories and in every one of them, they somehow freak me out but have me hooked to find out more. You've got to give it a read to see what I'm talking about !!!
This book is pretty good if you just speed through all of the stories. When you finish it you'll be like, "Hey, that was pretty good." But you can only understand it completely if you savor every moment, read every word, and look at every illustration.
There are 5 beautifully illustrated short stories in this spooky graphic novel. Entertaining and a fast read.
Oh man, this was creepy. I'm not good with scary things and typically steer away from anything that may freak me out, but I was intrigued by this graphic novel. Plus, it's spooky season, so why not? The illustrations are really fascinating, and I like how it's split into short stories. I definitely felt the spook factor but didn't think it was too scary ... until the end. I still have goosebumps and shivers.
Okay, dumb. Just dumb.
This book was TRIPPY! I absolutely adored this book, even though it made ZERO sense. Each chapter in this book is a different scary story. If you remember liking Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, as a child then you are going to love this. Its basically the same concept, except in a Graphic Novel form. This is also good for fans of the graphic novel, Anya's Ghost. It has similar moody themes. The artwork in this Graphic Novel was stunning. Each short story was set in a different time period and it was beautiful to see the different wardrobes come to life in these paintings. These short stories were eerily spooky and I could seriously keep rereading this book and never get bored. My favorite short stories in this book were, "A Lady's Hands Are Cold," and "His Face All Red." Each story ends in a way that lets the readers come to their own conclusions. If you are the type of person that can't stand for their questions not to be answered at the end of a story, then don't read this book, because this book literally kept me up at night trying to make sense of some of these endings! I loved this book, I need to buy this book. It was spooky good time. I recommend saving this graphic novel for around Halloween.
The description and images were striking, stunning. To those who sleep easily and are only entertained by horror, this book is perfect for you. To those who fear, who lay awake hearing every wail and song, seeing every cold hand, every drop of blood: caution.
This book is great, being in that it serves it’s purpose: it terrifies you.
This is a collection of short horror stories. It's one of my favorites that I have checked out several times and I probably just need to buy already.
The art is fantastic and I think that's a majority of the reason why the stories work so well. Honestly, if I could find some prints of some of the art, I would purchase them immediately!
My favorite story in the collection is "The Nesting Place" about a girl who goes to stay with her brother and his wife. She begins to notice that something is a little "off" about his wife and the climax of the story has some of the most unnerving artwork I've ever seen.
It's a pretty quick read overall, but the stories and artwork have a tendency to stay with you for awhile. I highly recommend this book!
Genuinely unsettling. The stories take you just up to the edge of something really awful and leave you there, because your own imagination will always supply something worse than whatever could be put on the page.
A graphica gothic masterpiece that has to be seen to be believed. Highly recommended.
