A very fine tale of two highschoolers, age 17, trying to determine their next stage in life after high school. Director Andre Techine who came to prominence in films right after the French New Wave, releases another of his complex films, where you really never know which aspect of the characters' lives will be central in the film. Or maybe they all are central.

Not much rings true in this opposites attract scenario, neither the ongoing pissing contest between the boys nor the abrupt switch to affectionate giggles (as Winter turns to Spring…awww!) nor even their first fumble screw beneath Bowie's Aladdin Sane poster. Furthermore a wholly predictable tragicomic ending is as fabricated as Damien’s loud and flowery “My Dream is Alive” t-shirt. Derivative and much too long. First gay love presented as a chick flick.
