Things have changed for Doctor Lucien Blake. His co-conspirator Lawson has been fired from Ballarat, his emotional embrace with Jean has changed life in the house and a new arrival leaves his tenure under threat. But that's the least of his troubles when he uncovers a dark story behind his mother's death. In this eight-part series return, the wonderfully maverick Doctor Blake is pushed to his limits to find the truth behind a range of intriguing murders in 1950s rural Australia.

Of the characters in this series, I enjoy Mattie (Maddie?) the most and the relationship between her and Blake is heartwarming. He encourages her to learn more and his relationships with all the women in this series is very respectful and equal. This is definitely one of the reasons I appreciate this series.

Watch on PBS! The seasons are shown in order, but seasons 3, 4 & 5 more often than 1 & 2 (suspect the early seasons are 1 distributor & later seasons another).

Lucien Blake is a bit of a stick in the mud at times, adhering rigidly to rules of the social order which no longer exists: honour of a man; stand when any woman enters the room; courtesy in all but most dire & vile situations (he even begs the pardon of a corpse before exposing that man's genitalia to a female pathologist!)

Great fun, spectacular vista's shot at low speed so viewed on any television they look fantastic. Great job maintaining era-appropros fashion (to the eye glasses (clunky & chunky), the women's stockings (silk and silky), and hairstyles (no woman dressed alone or in 15 minutes!). Australian Broadcasting Company does a fine job!

Yay, more Blake being benevolent, smart, and curious, while the locals worship him because he's the doctor, and the police dislike him because he makes them look bad by solving all their cases for them. Like Midsomer Murders, you can watch with your grandma, nothing too shocking or intellectually challenging.

This is a wonderful series! Gets better with each series, like aging fine wine! Love it!

Need season 4 and 5. There is also a movie out. Love this series.

Great series. Even better than Season Two. Lots of surprises. At times, acting like a private investigator, Blake seems obsessed with solving crimes to the point of being embarrassingly annoying to those around him.

I am enjoying the Dr. Blake mysteries. Set in rural Australia in the late 1950s in Ballarat (near Melbourne). Dr. Blake is the “police surgeon” – they call him in for autopsies when death happens. He is part surgeon, part detective. The mysteries are resolved every episode, but Dr. Blake seems to be under suspicion himself – he has continuing problems with the police brass, this season in particular - the police chief wants to get rid of him but he has a close network of friends and associates. His father was a doctor in the same town, so everyone seems to know him or his family. This season focuses on his close friends – Jean, the woman who is his housekeeper seems to know all about the locals and their histories. Mattie a boarder at his home is a community nurse, and her father a local politician, a young police officer also a boarder at his home gives him inside scoop to police activities. You may want to start at the beginning of the series, since his past includes the Army – he was stationed in the far East, he married an Asian woman and has a daughter living in China who he does not know, but would like to, but people are now calling him a communist because of his Asian experience. The murders are local and he never gives up easily, if he thinks it is a murder, he will pursue the case much to the chagrin / annoyance of the police who just want it resolved quickly. Interesting series, worth watching if you enjoy detective type series. The rural Australian setting is interesting, the balance between his personal life and professional are also interesting. I know Season 4 will be available on DVD in January 2018, so they are still making the series and it gives you a little time to catch up on the first three years.

I do adore Dr Blake! Smarter than everyone else in the room put together, he will not compromise his own idea of honor, is respectful especially to the innocent, wry, often able to see the good in questionable people, perceptive, and that's just the beginning. I love it when he talks about music and plays the piano which he does rarely.

Not sanctimonious like the first seasons. Quite liked season 3.
