Beautifully illustrated and inspirational. Great for kids (and adults) who see things differently.

This book was wonderful. It shows children how they can change there own lives by following there dreams. It leaves out the less impressive parts of this great artist's life and makes a great read.

This is a great Caldecott winner that teaches perseverance in overcoming odds.

"Radiant Child" is indeed radiant, with Steptoe's richly hued, roughly textured art dancing across each page. Using photographs of his own paintings made on found wood scraps from his native Brooklyn, Steptoe introduces the reader to Jean-Michel Basquiat, a young man with a fervent desire to become a famous artist. The book starts with Basquiat's early years spent drawing with his mother, follows him as he suffers through physical injury and his mother's mental illness, and concludes with his teen and adult years, making wild and interesting art like he always dreamed he would. A colorful and engaging read, certainly worthy of the 2017 Caldecott Medal!

Winner of the 2017 Caldecott Medal, Radiant Child: The Story of Young Artist Jean-Michel Basquiat tells how Jean-Michel Basquiat evolved as an artist, from his youth to his young adulthood. Written and illustrated by Javaka Steptoe, the story interweaves Basquiat’s development as an artist alongside the story of his upbringing, which involved a strong bond with his mother, tragedy, heartbreak, loss, and triumph. Steptoe illustrated the book in the style of Basquiat, and ends with a bio of Basquiat and description of motifs and symbolism in Basquiat’s work. The best part of this book is the wisdom that is shared through the story, such as the description of Basquiat’s art as not neat or clean, but somehow still beautiful. For me, this is a wonderful message for children to learn about their own artwork. Life is messy and beautiful, and art that reflects that complexity can give new meaning to things we deem ordinary.

This is the 2017 Caldecott Award. It is a picture book biography of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a New York artist who rose to fame in the 1980s with his unique art-style. The illustrations, for which the Caldecott was awarded are by Javaka Steptoe, in the style of Basquiat.

Brilliant illustrations that mirror the artistic work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. This would be great used in an elementary school or even middle school classroom for an introduction to this artist. This book is meant to be a catalyst to look into this artist further.
