Two percent of the world's population has disappeared. Was it the Rapture? A mass murder? Cult suicides? Aliens? Based on Tom Perrotta's bestselling novel, the series follows Kevin Garvey, police chief and father of two in Mapletown, New York, three years after the mysterious event. As Garvey struggles to grieve for his losses, rebuild his life, and regain a sense of normalcy within the community, the world around him grows ever stranger.

a dark B grade disappearance mystery..... dark as a Stanley Kubrick work but without his lighting skills.... what is with these modern producers spending so much on night scenes with no light, viewer ends up staring hard into a scrying mirror

This is it folks, intelligent film-making.
Have patience the first 2 or 3 eps. The viewer is learning along with the characters in the story.
It wouldn't let me go, always was something I wanted to see carry on the next episode. I admit frustration watching those first episodes but carried through to a great ending. Wel worth the time. George

Stopped after first few episodes.

Justin Theroux is a smoldering hottie, in my opinion. Like Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus in Walking Dead. That certainly helps, but it is good story telling and setting. So tired of sullen teens; Margaret Qualley as Jill makes no exception. The series has an odd premise, but, oh well. Fun to binge.

The director tried to get the lead actors shirt off in as many scenes as possible. lol But it still didn't save the script. Do not expect people to act normal in this series. Ex. if someone steals your child you quietly run after them. Yep not normal. Bad acting, yes, but who doesn't love a B movie now and then

It's a stupid, unrealistic, and boring.
It explains nothing, terrible acting, and a horrible story.

On the season 1 specials there was an interview with Tom Perrotta and Damon Lindelof. Damon, the guy that did Lost, said that if he has a choice between the normal and the weird he tends to go to the weird. He also said that he appreciated Perrotta because he kept the story slightly more grounded. I think this to me perfectly encapsulates The Leftovers. Season 1 is good, Season 2 is amazing and Season 3 is good but all three seasons start with weird, reign it in a little bit and then dive right back into weird.
For anyone thats giving this a try the first season is a bit tough. You are plunged right into the weird without giving you much to work with. The first season is very grim and there are not many moments of levity or lightening of the tone of the story. I have a real hard time with the Matt storylines. I find myself yelling at the TV and then feeling stupid when I do, but the other characters I found very interesting.
Season 2 dives right back into weird and then slowly brings it back. It has two really amazing episodes at the end that are tearjerkers
Season 3 I think Lindelof got the reigns and the weird is a bit more prominent. I like that it was only 3 seasons long and that they were able to "finish" things up, although it seemed a little forced at times.
I agree with other reviewers the profanity is just too much. Im down with an F word during appropriate moments but to me every character was dropping Fbombs all the time and for no reason.

Can see why people don't like it. If you want linear storytelling, stay away. If you want answers tied up in a neat package, run the other way. If you want to be challenged, go for it. If you want flawed characters, it's for you. The last 20 minutes of the series finale are heartbreaking, and turns the story premise on its head. It takes 3 seasons, but be patient.

I think Id like this better if there werent so much swearing. I LOVE scyfy, the weirder the better, but if I watch a movie or show I want them to be able to justify the language. I dont mind hearing it once in a while but unless there is a reason for it, I dont want to hear it as a regular course of speaking.
I see it changing our culture and degrading our language.

This series did not capture my interest. Similar to too many other so called scary DVD's. Watched one episode & ditched it.
