"A missing eye. A broken wing. A stolen country. The last job didn't end well. Years go by, and scars fade, but memories only fester. For the animals of the Captain's company, survival has meant keeping a low profile, building a new life, and trying to forget the war they lost. But now the Captain's whiskers are twitching at the idea of evening the score."--Page 4 of cover.

Better than "Watership Down" by a long shot!

One reviewer called this book "Redwall meets the Wild Bunch" - a slightly more accurate description might be "Wind in the Willows meets Unforgiven". It's definitely violent and bloody, but entertaining in much the same fashion as a Mad Max movie. Although the characters are all animals, this is most definitely a spaghetti Western set near the Mexican border - so much so, that I have to wonder why Polansky bothers to thinly disguise the location with fictional country names - especially since the stoat assassin Bonsoir is a Frenchman! Not just the accent and mannerisms, he literally describes himself as a Frenchman. So if this world has a France, one apparently near-identical to ours, why call other countries names like The Garden or The Southern Kingdom? It's the one place where the worldbuilding falls flat, and it's jarring enough to drop my rating from 4 stars to 3.5 stars.
