"Did you know that if the conditions are just right, and if you add a little electricity, or magic, or luck, that an imaginary friend might appear just when you need one? An imaginary friend like Fred. Fred is the best imaginary friend you could ever hope for, but no matter how hard he tries, the same thing always happens: his friend finds a friend in the real world, and Fred fades away, bit by bit, waiting to be wished for again... Then one day, a boy named Sam wishes for a friend, and Fred appears! For a while everything is perfect. But what about the day when Sam finds a real friend? Could it be that this time, something magical might happen...?" -- Provided by publisher.

I thought it was a really cute concept and plot line, however I wouldn't recommend it for a storytime program: the pictures lacked color in my opinion and it is quite lengthy!

Whenever a lonely child wishes for an imaginary friend, Fred appears. Though they always play -- some nicely, some not -- for awhile, each child eventually finds real friends and leaves Fred behind. But Fred's latest pal, Sam, is different; he likes acting and music and comic books, just like Fred. Could Sam be the forever friend Fred's been waiting for? Whimsical and minimally colored, this book from popular creators Eoin Colfer and Oliver Jeffers will resonate with readers (young and old) who know that keeping friends is just as important as making them. Friendships come in all different shapes, sizes, and planes of existence. This is a great book about imaginary friends! Enjoyed by many staff at Martha Cooper Library.

A lovely picture book about imaginary friends, and what happens to imaginary friends when their human friends move on. I liked the artwork a lot, and thought it was perfectly paired with the text.
