...I am influenced by a societal pressure to be thin...I feel it the same way anybody who picks up a magazine and sees Keira Knightley’s elegantly bony shoulder blades poking out of a backless dress does. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen my shoulder blades once. Honestly, I’m dubious that any part of my body could be so sharp and firm as to be described as a “blade.” ...even though I wish I could be thin, and that I could have the ease of lifestyle that I associate with being thin, I don’t wish for it with all of my heart. Because my heart is reserved for way more important things.
Who is the beauty icon that inspires you the most? ...Mine is Nosferatu, because that vampire taught me my number-one and number-two favorite beauty tricks of all time: avoid the sun at all costs and always try to appear shrouded in shadows.

Funny. Just like The Mindy Project, but like real life.
“My sense of humor is wet and loud and risqué like topless day at the water park.”
-Mindy Kaling
This book is inspiring in that she shares her ambitions and insecurities regarding career, romance and having a non-traditional body type that all young women feel. She shares her thoughts on the glamour puss, her own beauty tips, and that “celebrity secrets are more valuable than diamonds” inferring that Carson Daly has a secret twin in order for him to keep up his grueling schedule. Mindy Kaling is very open about her competitive nature wondering aloud if this is what keeps her going. This book is delivered in a fast paced, witty yet conversational style that will keep you riveted for that reason along with her entertaining writing style and its’ unexpected juxtaposition of words and ideas. She ends her book with this thought…
“I get worried that telling girls how difficult it is to be confident implies a tacit expectation that girls won’t be able to do it.” But we know that’s just not true…she thought she could so she did.
The reader and author, Mindy Kaling with comments from Greg Daniels and B. J. Novak, makes this telling of her life and thoughts even more personal by reading this to us, her audience. She is the lively, lighthearted chatty friend you enjoy hearing from.
If you’re looking for an upbeat fun and funny sharing of a young woman’s experiences trying to establish a career in the entertainment business (or any other profession), this is the book for you. She finds the humor in her life from childhood to her young adulthood and takes the listener along on this journey. I chortled, snickered, and had a very good time throughout. Climb on aboard and enjoy the ride.
It was "meh." Some parts were really funny and other parts were boring and totally unnecessary. She makes a lot of small talk, and she comments about how good she is at it, but at the end of the day, I felt like I read a book about small talk. It could have used a lot more funny parts and been a bit deeper, a bit meatier. I would recommend Bossypants, Girl with Lower Back Tattoo or anything by David Sedaris instead. This book wasn't bad, it was just disappointing because Mindy Khaling cracks me up otherwise!
Loved this book, maybe because I love Mindy as an actress but it gave me the opportunity to know her a little more. I feel like we would be BFF's in an alternate reality haha
A companion piece to Kahling's other memoir, celebrate life's little funny moments (and the occasional major event) with Mindy.
Didn’t enjoy this book at all. Returned it before finishing
Is it possible to look forward to driving?! With my car pal, Mindy on board, absolutely! This was a fun listen narrated by Mindy.
Mindy Kaling - writer, actress, frequent McDonald's customer.
In her second book, Kaling shares essays on mentorship in TV writing, building confidence by working hard, and how her relationship with BJ Novak can be described as "soup snakes". Hilarity ensues!
BJ also makes a vocal appearance on the audiobook - strongly defending why he fell asleep at the theater.
Mindy Kaling is really quite funny. You will enjoy this I promise!
