Pleasantly suprising..and your not your typical WW2 flick. This is primarily a drama of the suffering of the refugees in Henan province back in 1942. There is a few well done "action" sequences..but by and large , the movie is very gutwrenching and depressing due to its subject matter.

This movie is long (about two and a half hours), and the pace is fairly slow for the most part. The whole film is subtitled; with the exception of Brody's reporter character, most of the dialogue is in Chinese. Had I realized this beforehand, I would probably have passed it up--and that would have been a mistake. A little-known piece of history is brought to gritty, disturbing life in this excellent film.

The story of millions of people fleeing war and famine during the Japanese invasion of China. This is a film to depict human suffering at is utmost, and hence it is not meant to entertain. The presence of American actors helps to attract western audience a bit. The settings were well researched and well executed with good CGI effects. Not for the average film audience.

Violence: Plenty of gore depicting the wounding and mayhem of civilians due to bombardment by enemy planes. Bloodied, dying child. Dogs devouring human corpses. Some people may have to look away.
