Miss Jessie'sMiss Jessie's chronicles the Branch sisters' remarkable story. When they were children, their stern father encouraged them to become self-reliant and not to depend on their looks to get ahead. Taking this message to heart, they blossomed into business owners and leaders in their field, using ingenuity and without borrowing a dime. They soaked up the entrepreneurial and creative culture of the early hip-hop era on the streets of Brooklyn in the late 1990s, and in the high-end salons of Manhattan. They blended these inspirations to establish a business that has gone from their kitchen table to the shelves of major retailers around the globe, revolutionizing the hair-care industry. A charming and enlightening look at the women behind the brand, Miss Jessie's is chock-full of entertaining stories and invaluable instruction that can be applied to any business: an authentic expression that the American Dream is possible.

I've heard of the Miss Jessie's brand but haven't had the pleasure of using any of their products yet. I am also fully aware of the passing of their co-founder, Titi Branch. Still, I was interested in knowing how the Branch sisters got their start; and their story is very inspiring.

These sisters hustled their butts off to accomplish their professional goals (they literally setup their own manufacturing & distribution center in the basement of their brownstone). Given the instant gratification age that we live in, reading about this level of ambition and hard work is refreshing, especially for those of us out here who understand that consistent success requires rolling up your sleeves and being willing to learn & do everything. Man, I'd love to hear Miko Branch speak in person one day in the future.

With a BA in Women's Studies, and a MS in Professional Counseling, and a love for beauty products, and an interest in wealth building, I was able to read this book from various perspectives. I was able to read critically and between the lines, as the author gave details about their childhood; I was able to pick up things she did not say directly. Something happened to the older sister, when they were in their father's and Grandmother's custody; and it was most likely sexual assault, namely rape.
She had clinical depression which is a high risk factor for suicide.

What I like about the book is that it talks about achieving your dreams, and learn from setbacks, failures, mistakes--and never, never give up--no matter what.

But, while family can help build you up; it can tear you down. Children need their caregivers, especially their mothers to protect them from danger and harm. While we do what we can, we must be MORE responsible as parents.
