It could have been a great movie, but staid acting and a poor ending did it for me. 2 and 1/2 stars.

Watch the extras!
The story relies on stereotypes & perceptions of the topics.
It is then redeemed by the interviews in the extras.

Forest Whitaker plays a man released from prison after 18 years and there are forces trying to help him lead a good life, but there are forces that are not on his side. This is a remake of a 1973 French film which starred two great French actors, Alain Delon and Jean Gabin. I’ll now have to take a look at that original to compare. I liked this one better than the critics, who gave this only marginally good reviews (44% fresh on the Rotten Tomatoes site). It was good to see old-time actors Harvey Keitel , Brenda Blethyn, and Ellen Burstyn giving very good performances.

A little slow to start but I found it an okay movie. An ex-con tries to start a new life but the sheriff decides to harass him.
