An interesting look at the assumptions of risk of the place that is called home and how people cope with that, also a bit of pride in that we live where the skies can be wild and tolls that can sometimes take.

This book describes what it's like to live in one of America's "tornado alleys" and how one storm in particular turned the lives of the people of one heavily urbanized area upside down. Lightning does strike twice, as it did for Moore, Oklahoma. The story not only tells how the lives of residents were affected, but also those of government weather forecasters who didn't see it coming, and the fiercely competitive local television forecasters in neighbouring Oklahoma City who did see it coming, but were so affected by the carnage, including the deaths of children at a school, that at least one - of 35 years experience - threw in the towel because he couldn't bear covering such devastation anymore. The book is a reminder that while some states may have more tornadoes than others they can happen anywhere at anytime with little forewarning and it is a good idea to be prepared - we keep hearing about the need to have a 72 hour kit as well as a safe room - but how few of us actually have them?

This is an incredible read...something very hard to put down. It is a well-written account of a devastating event. You are transported into the situation and made to feel a part of what's going on...the people are your neighbors, friends, family...the town is your town. The frightening thing is, is that it really happened. I recommend it highly.
